Abstract: Advanced metallic materials play crucial roles in the technological advancements across numerous disciplines, including aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, bioengineering, and beyond. Advanced manufacturing techniques surpass the limitations of traditional methods, offering superior levels of design, efficiency, manufacturing flexibility, and energy sustainability. Moreover, they pave the way for new paradigms in alloy design and modification. This seminar will delve into three research topics focusing on the design and manufacturing of advanced metallic alloys, particularly in aerospace applications: i) Anisotropic strengthening in a nickel-based superalloy with applications in aircraft engines and power plants. ii) Advanced treatment of aluminum-based alloys to enhance fatigue resistance in airplane components. iii) Laser powder bed fusion fabrication of stainless steels to enhance corrosion fatigue properties. This work contributes to a deeper understanding of the underlying mechanisms in advanced processing and manufacturing, for fabricating high-value components with desirable mechanical and environmental performance.
