Kathleen Sellers graduated from Niagara University, Summa Cum Laude. She received her MSN, from the Catholic University of America with a role focus as a Clinical Nurse Specialist in Oncology and Administration. Her PhD in nursing is from Adelphi University with the title of her dissertation being "The Meaning of Autonomous Nursing Practice to the Staff Nurse Practicing in a Shared Governance Environment: A Hermeneutic Analysis."

Over her forty year career she has practiced as a surgical staff nurse, a nurse manager, Director of St. Peter's Hospice, Albany, NY; the first oncology specialist at Albany Medical Center where she established the first standards of care for chemotherapy administration in the 1980s, Director of Medical and Mental Health Nursing, Director of Nursing, Bassett Healthcare where she implemented shared governance as a structure to facilitate professional nursing practice.

Upon completion of her PhD in 1996, she began her academic career at SUNYIT. Her program of research is focused on promoting professional nursing practice amongst nurses practicing in acute care. She presents regularly and has over 20 publications, the majority as primary author. Her most notable being "The Prevalence of Horizontal Violence Amongst Registered Nurses Practicing in New York State." Her current research endeavors include: the Nursing Resilience, Satisfaction and Engagement (NURSE's) Study sponsored by Bassett Healthcare and Measuring the Degree of Engagement in Shared Governance, also sponsored by Bassett Healthcare.

While at SUNYIT/SUNY Polytechnic Institute, she was the coordinator of the graduate program in Nursing Administration, received the Chancellor's Award for Teaching and served as Interim Dean of the School of Nursing as a tenured Associate Professor. In 2010, she was recruited to be the Chair of the Department of Nursing as a tenured full professor at Alfred State College. There she stabilized the Department, implemented Alfred State's RN/BS online program and oversaw preparations which led to that program's first Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) accreditation.

In 2013, she returned to SUNY Polytechnic as an untenured Associate Professor to teach, once again, at the graduate level and to assist in the development of the infrastructure that would move this new organization towards becoming a research university.
