Mathematics, Physics, and Data Science at SUNY Polytechnic Institute
SUNY Poly’s College of Arts and Sciences is home to three academic departments in the mathematical and physical sciences: Mathematics, Physics, and Data Science and Analytics.
Recently restructured to reflect growth and evolving priorities, the departments now offer distinct academic leadership while maintaining interdisciplinary collaboration, supporting SUNY Poly’s Strategic Plan by strengthening disciplinary expertise and advancing innovation in science, technology, and data-driven research.

Department of Mathematics
The Department of Mathematics provides students with a strong foundation in mathematical theory, quantitative reasoning, and analytical problem-solving. Mathematics plays a critical role across SUNY Poly’s academic programs, supporting learning in engineering, computing, business, and the sciences.
Students develop analytical and quantitative skills valued in careers in engineering, finance, technology, education, operations research, and data analytics, as well as preparation for advanced graduate study.

Department of Physics
The Department of Physics offers students the opportunity to study the fundamental principles that govern the natural world through coursework, research, and applied learning. Students gain experience in scientific experimentation, computational modeling, and analytical reasoning while working closely with faculty engaged in active research.
Physics programs prepare students for careers in physics, engineering, scientific research, technology development, education, and advanced graduate study in physics and related sciences.

Department of Data Science and Analytics
The Department of Data Science and Analytics prepares students to analyze, interpret, and apply data in ways that support innovation across industries. Students gain experience in data analysis, statistical modeling, computing, and emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and machine learning.
Graduates are prepared for careers in data analytics, artificial intelligence, machine learning, business intelligence, technology development, and research, as well as advanced graduate study in data science and related fields.
