Bachelor of Science in Physics

From the Smallest Particles to the Largest Questions

Explore the fundamental laws that shape our universe and discover how physics provides the foundation for emerging technologies and scientific innovation.

The Program

What is the universe made of? How do matter and energy interact? Why does the physical world behave the way it does? How can understanding those fundamental principles lead to the next technological breakthrough?

Many of the technologies transforming our world are rooted in physics.

From the behavior of semiconductor devices and superconducting materials to the sensors that allow robots to interact with their surroundings, physics provides the theoretical foundation for innovation across science and technology.

Students interested in fields such as artificial intelligence, quantum computing, robotics, semiconductors, advanced materials, and next-generation computing can use their physics education as a foundation for working at the intersection of scientific discovery and technological innovation.

Physics explores the physical world at every scale. At SUNY Poly, you'll investigate everything from fundamental particles like quarks, protons, and electrons to the behavior of matter, energy, and forces, and even cosmological structures like black holes and the universe itself.

But physics isn't only about understanding what already exists. Discoveries in physics provide the theories and frameworks that make new technologies possible. Physics forms the foundation of traditional engineering disciplines while continuing to drive advances in areas like artificial intelligence, semiconductors, superconductors, robotics, quantum computing, advanced materials, and other emerging technologies.

Through SUNY Poly's BS in Physics, you'll develop the scientific knowledge, mathematical and computational skills, and problem-solving abilities to explore complex questions and prepare to contribute to what comes next.

What You’ll Explore + How You’ll Learn

Your study of physics will take you from fundamental questions about matter and energy to the principles behind some of today’s most advanced technologies.

The Curriculum

With a BS in Physics from SUNY Poly, you’ll develop a strong foundation in the principles that govern matter, energy, motion, forces, and their interactions, and explore increasingly complex ideas to discover how mathematics can be used to model, explain, and predict the behavior of the physical world.

During the course of your studies, you will explore areas such as:

  • Classical mechanics
  • Electricity and magnetism
  • Waves and optics
  • Modern physics
  • Quantum mechanics
  • Computational physics
  • Mathematical and computational modeling
  • Experimental physics

Together, these areas help you understand physical phenomena across dramatically different scales, from the behavior of individual particles to complex systems and the structure of the universe.

You'll also begin to see the connections between fundamental physics and other disciplines. The principles you study provide the scientific foundation for engineering, electronics, computing, materials science, nanotechnology, and many of today's emerging technologies.

See Physics in Action

Physics comes to life in the lab. Many of SUNY Poly’s foundational physics courses include dedicated laboratory experiences where you’ll move beyond equations and theory to observe, test, measure, and analyze the principles you’re learning in class.

Using laboratory equipment and professional data-analysis software, you’ll conduct experiments spanning classical mechanics, electromagnetism, thermodynamics, optics, and modern physics, giving you the opportunity to explore scientific discoveries from Newton’s time to the physics shaping our understanding of the world today.

Along the way, you’ll gain hands-on experience in experimentation and scientific discovery, data collection and analysis, experimental design, measurement and uncertainty, and scientific communication.

Connect Physics to Emerging Technology

The principles you study in physics extend far beyond the classroom. They form the scientific foundation for technologies and disciplines including engineering, electronics, computing, materials science, nanotechnology, semiconductors, robotics, and quantum computing.

By understanding the principles behind matter, energy, forces, and computation, you'll be positioned to explore how fundamental science contributes to new discoveries and technologies.

Build Skills That Go Beyond Physics

A physics degree gives you specialized scientific knowledge, but its value extends much further.

Through coursework, laboratory experiences, computational work, research, and collaborative problem-solving, students with a BS in Physics develop skills that can be applied across industries, including:

  • Analytical and critical thinking
  • Quantitative reasoning
  • Mathematical modeling
  • Computational methods
  • Data analysis and interpretation
  • Creative problem-solving
  • Experimental design
  • Independent learning
  • Teamwork and collaboration
  • Technical communication

These skills can prepare you to move between disciplines, learn new technologies, and approach increasingly complex problems throughout your career.

That's why physics graduates can pursue opportunities not only in physics and research, but across technology, engineering, computing, medicine, data science, finance, consulting, and other quantitative fields.

Why Physics at SUNY Poly?

At SUNY Poly, physics doesn't exist in isolation.

You'll study in a polytechnic environment where science and technology come together, and where physics connects naturally with engineering, mathematics, computing, nanotechnology, and other STEM disciplines.

That means you can explore fundamental questions about how our universe works while discovering how those same principles drive real-world innovation. And in SUNY Poly's close-knit learning environment, you'll have opportunities to know your professors, find mentors, and take your interests beyond the classroom.

Here, you'll benefit from the Polytechnic Advantage, where you'll:

  • Explore how the universe works, from its smallest particles to its largest structures.
  • Discover the physics behind modern technology, including semiconductors, robotics, AI, and quantum computing.
  • Turn theory into experience through computation, experimentation, projects, and problem-solving.
  • Work closely with faculty and pursue opportunities in research, independent projects, and teaching.
  • Prepare for what comes next with skills that translate across science, engineering, technology, graduate study, and more.

From Curiosity to Capability

You don't need to arrive knowing exactly where a physics degree will take you.

You might be fascinated by quantum mechanics. You might want to understand the science behind semiconductors or emerging technologies. You might see yourself conducting research, pursuing engineering, working with data and computing, or continuing to graduate school.

That's part of the value of studying physics. You'll leave with a deeper understanding of the physical world, but you'll also develop the ability to learn, analyze, adapt, and solve problems across disciplines.

Because when you understand how the world works, you have a powerful foundation for helping build what comes next.
