In a research article published by Leonardo, Dr. Ana Jofre, SUNY Poly Assistant Professor of Creative Arts and Technologies, developed an analytical model that combines facial features from the seven universal facial expressions (joy, sadness, anger, disgust, fear, surprise, contempt) to simulate facial character development.

The results show that systematically imprinting emotional features onto a neutral face transforms it into one with distinct character. The 3D digital faces were created using Blender, and the model was implemented with a simple Python script. This method could be applied to creative works that depend on character creation, ranging from figurative sculpture to game design, and allows the creator to incorporate chance into the creative process. Dr. Jofre demonstrated the sculpture application with 3D printouts and ceramic casts of the generated faces.
