Pre-Law Concentration in Interdisciplinary Studies

The B.A. in Interdisciplinary Studies provides excellent preparation for students interested in pursuing a law degree. Our graduates have continued on to law schools including the University at Buffalo Law School, Syracuse University College of Law, Albany Law School, and the University of San Francisco School of Law.

The American Bar Association emphasizes that there is no single undergraduate major or course of study that provides the best preparation for law school. Instead, the ABA recommends that students interested in law school seek out an education that is rigorous and challenging and that emphasizes the critical reading, thinking, research, and communication skills that are at the foundation of legal practice. As the ABA suggests, "[w]hatever major you select, you are encouraged to pursue an area of study that interests and challenges you, while taking advantage of opportunities to develop your research and writing skills. Taking a broad range of difficult courses from demanding instructors is excellent preparation for legal education."1

The IDS Program offers pre-law students just the type of education recommended by the ABA. The program's core coursework will challenge you to think in critical, analytical, and integrative ways and to examine problems from a variety of different perspectives. Our emphasis on interdisciplinary inquiry will accustom you to approaching and understanding problems in their complexity and uncertainty. You will gain substantial practice in research and writing and will hone your ability to communicate with clarity and precision. Finally, the opportunity to design your Individualized concentration and capstone project will enable you to take coursework and explore subjects that reflect your particular intellectual and professional goals.
