AIM Photonics Booth to Provide Business and Partnership Opportunities
and Updates to Global Audience
AIM Photonics’ Efforts Build on Progress of Finger Lakes Forward, the Region’s Award-Winning Strategic Plan to Generate Robust Economic Growth and Community Development

ALBANY, NY – The American Institute for Manufacturing Integrated Photonics (AIM Photonics) today announced that a number of the initiative’s leading researchers, scientists from a number of its corporate partners, and supporting staff will attend the SPIE Photonics West conference and exhibition, which is taking place January 27 through February 1 in San Francisco, California, to share updates and highlight opportunities for the event’s photonics-focused global audience.
At the SPIE Photonics West conference, AIM Photonics representatives will be meeting with interested potential partners, as well as others from the industry to provide details and updates on the opportunities that the initiative provides, including updates on the Test, Assembly, and Packaging facility, located in Rochester, New York, which is expected to be completed later this year. AIM Photonics has seen strong interest in membership, with more than 80 signed members and additional interested collaborators from across the United States, including those representing areas ranging from industry and academia to government.
Dr. Benjamin Miller, AIM Photonics Academic Lead for Sensors Key Technology Manufacturing Area (KTMA) and professor at the University of Rochester Medical Center, will co-chair the session, “Frontiers in Biological Detection: From Nanosensors to Systems X,” which will include a number of AIM Photonics speakers. “Research on integrated photonics sensors for medical and environmental applications is making great progress,” said Dr. Miller. “We look forward to presenting our most recent accomplishments at Photonics West.”
Dr. Madeleine Glick, AIM Photonics Academy Industrial Liaison Officer, will co-chair the Metro and Data Center Optical Networks and Short Reach Links conference and will be Chair of the session, Scaling Datacenter Optical Interconnects within that conference. “Photonic Integrated Chip (PIC) technology has become a critical part of Data Communication and Networking performance,” said Dr. Glick, “AIM Photonics is helping small and large companies bring this technology to market quicker with research in advanced manufacturing methods and training.”
“As the national AIM Photonics initiative continues to progress, establishing its Test, Assembly, and Packaging facility to enable leading-edge research and development efforts and support New York State’s innovation ecosystem, in addition to significant R&D nodes across the United States, we are excited to attend SPIE Photonics West in order to further provide information related to AIM’s opportunities to the top-tier researchers and industry leaders who will be in attendance,” said AIM Photonics CEO Dr. Michael Liehr. “We eagerly anticipate highlighting the opportunities that AIM Photonics presents, from the TAP facility to our PDK (Process Design Kit) and MPW (Multi Project Wafer) capabilities that can provide the framework for impactful and cost-effective collaborations and partnerships.”
As part of this effort, AIM Photonics will host an exhibition booth where program leaders, researchers, and supporting staff members will provide information about the initiative’s progress to-date and related opportunities for interested organizations to work with AIM or become a member. Booth number 5642 will be located in the Moscone Center’s North Hall and representatives will be available from Tuesday, January 30 through Wednesday, January 31 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Thursday, February 1 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The premier photonics and laser event is hosted by SPIE (which was previously known as the Society of Photo-optical Instrumentation Engineers). The conference and exhibition is an annual tradeshow for industry leaders in photonics, lasers, and biomedical optics to reach a global marketplace. The world’s most comprehensive such event features more than 1,300 companies, while researchers present their cutting-edge work via keynote addresses, with technical and business sessions taking place to inform attendees from around the world about the latest advances.

Accelerating Finger Lakes Forward
Today’s announcement complements “Finger Lakes Forward,” the region’s comprehensive blueprint to generate robust economic growth and community development. The State has already invested more than $3.4 billion in the region since 2012 to lay the groundwork for the plan – investing in key industries including photonics, agriculture and food production, and advanced manufacturing. Today, unemployment is down to the lowest levels since before the Great Recession; personal and corporate income taxes are down; and businesses are choosing places like Rochester, Batavia, and Canandaigua as a destination to grow and invest in.
Now, the region is accelerating Finger Lakes Forward with a $500 million State investment through the Upstate Revitalization Initiative, announced by Governor Cuomo in December 2015. The State’s $500 million investment will incentivize private business to invest well over $2.5 billion – and the region’s plan, as submitted, projects up to 8,200 new jobs.
