Earns Multiple Spots in Latest Lists of Best Regional Universities, Top Public Schools, Best Colleges for Veterans, Social Mobility, and Best Value Schools
ALBANY AND UTICA, NY – SUNY Polytechnic Institute’s (SUNY Poly’s) yearly rankings by U.S. News & World Report continue to emphasize the institution’s academic strength, along with its ability to support veterans and social mobility, while providing excellent value to students.
U.S. News named SUNY Poly 12th in its “Best Regional Universities-North” ranking and 2nd for the “Top Public Schools” Regional Universities-North ranking in 2022. In the same regional category, SUNY Poly remained in the top 20 for “Social Mobility,” which recognizes colleges that advance this critical effort by successfully enrolling and graduating economically disadvantaged students. SUNY Poly was once again ranked in the top fifty for “Best Value Colleges” for Regional Universities-North.
SUNY Poly also ranked 4th in “Best Colleges for Veterans,” up one position from the institution’s 2021 rankings in the Regional Universities-North category. This honor is especially meaningful because SUNY Poly’s Utica campus is in close proximity to both the Air Force Research Laboratory—Information Directorate in Rome, New York, and the U.S. Army’s Fort Drum military reservation.
"These 2022 rankings are an excellent indication of the top-tier academic experience SUNY Poly students receive, and we are honored the efforts of our faculty, staff, and students continue to be recognized by U.S. News & World Report,” said Dr. Tod A. Laursen, SUNY Polytechnic Institute Acting President. “These rankings reflect how SUNY Poly provides a world-class education at an incredible value, with critical opportunities for our veterans and a powerful platform for each of our students to achieve upward social mobility.”
SUNY Poly’s top 20 ranking for “Social Mobility” further shines a light on the institution’s high emphasis on providing educational opportunities for students of all backgrounds, especially through its Educational Opportunity Program (EOP). The EOP at SUNY Poly facilitates access, academic support, and financial assistance to first-time, full-time students who show promise for succeeding in college but may need additional support.
SUNY Poly is included in the Regional Universities-North category and placed 12th overall out of 175 ranked universities. The annual rankings by U.S. News and World Report categorize colleges and universities based upon their Carnegie Classification, created by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. U.S. News & World Report maintains nine different ranking categories, each with different weights assigned to them to determine the final institution positions. These categories include graduation and retention rates, social mobility, undergraduate academic reputation, average alumni giving rate, and faculty and financial resources, among others.
“The 2022 U.S. News and World Report rankings testify to SUNY Poly’s academic quality and its value proposition to students,” said SUNY Poly’s Interim Provost Dr. Steven Schneider. “SUNY Poly is thrilled to offer a wide range of educational programs in relevant subjects via our partnerships and flexible online degree programs.”
Over the past year, SUNY Poly has continued to progress, maintaining steady enrollment of nearly 3,000 students while working to make obtaining both baccalaureate and post-baccalaureate degrees easier through increased online distance learning opportunities and via partnerships with a number of institutions, including Onondaga Community College and the Oneida-Herkimer-Madison BOCES Pathways in Technology Early College High School (P-TECH), among others.
In addition, Stacker recently ranked SUNY Poly in the top 100 “Public colleges with the best return on investment,” indicating, “These numbers all but guarantee that SUNY Poly Tech students will be able to secure stable, high-paying jobs after graduation.”
The Association of Public & Land-Grant Universities (APLU) also featured SUNY Poly in its selection of "Transfer Student Success Programs," noting that, "In addition to unique agreements with two-year schools, SUNY Poly also offers a Path to Poly program to first-year students…allowing transfer counselors the opportunity to provide guidance and resources to the program participants that will prepare them for a smooth transition to SUNY Poly upon admission.”
