Dr. Abolfazl Karimpour, Assistant Professor of Transportation Engineering at SUNY Polytechnic Institute, has published research in collaboration with the University of Arizona and the Town of Marana, Arizona, titled, “Modeling red-light running behavior using high-resolution event-based data: a finite mixture modeling approach,” in the Journal of Intelligent Transportation Systems.

To effectively reduce the number of red-light violations and crashes, it is crucial to explore red-light running (RLR) behavior at local intersections, understand the contributing factors, and identify the riskiest intersections by estimating RLR frequency. This study utilized a finite mixture modeling method to understand the contributing factors to RLR behavior and estimate this violating behavior at signalized intersections.

The application of the proposed method has the potential to significantly improve traffic safety and reduce the number of crashes and fatalities caused by red-light violations.
