Ranking highlights academic quality, return on investment for students

Utica, NY – Further demonstrating the top-tier educational opportunities that have become synonymous with SUNY Polytechnic Institute, the institution announced that it has been ranked number five in the nation for its online accounting program by CollegeChoice.net, which sets SUNY Poly ahead of other institutions such as the University of Connecticut (#8), University of Texas - Dallas (#22), and University of Michigan (#26).

“SUNY Poly is proud to have such a dedicated community of faculty and staff who make a high ranking like this possible,” said Dr. Bahgat Sammakia, Interim President of SUNY Polytechnic Institute. “It is through their continued leadership that SUNY Poly is able to provide our students with such a rigorous Master of Accountancy program that also offers incredible value and a strong foundation for future success, and we are thrilled to receive this recognition from CollegeChoice.net.”

A leading authority in college and university rankings and resources, College Choice evaluated schools based on academic quality, institutional reputation, program accreditation, along with return on investment, or the differential between tuition costs and average early career earnings.

“This distinction is evidence that SUNY Poly educates and graduates some of the best accounting students in the world,” said Dr. William Durgin, SUNY Poly Provost. “We are proud that CollegeChoice.net has taken note of the outstanding work done by our students and faculty. This ranking helps to ensure that the educational opportunities found here at SUNY Poly remain among the highest caliber available.”

The SUNY Poly Master of Science in Accountancy program is primarily intended for students who have the equivalent of an undergraduate degree in accounting. Students who may not have a background in accounting but desire an opportunity to broaden their capabilities and specialize in this area are afforded the option of doing so. These students are required to include additional preparatory work in their program and complete it under the guidance of the program coordinator.

“This most recent ranking further confirms the growing reputation of our outstanding accounting programs and faculty,” said Dr. Robert Edgell, Dean of the College of Business Management. “Building on this momentum, our faculty recently launched a new forensic accounting and valuation concentration. This program expansion not only reflects our college's deep commitment to continuous improvement and our students, but also keeps our curriculum at the forefront of accounting education.”

According to the Labor Bureau, the accounting profession is projected to grow 11% from 2014-2024. In general, employment growth of accountants and auditors is expected to be closely tied to the health of the overall economy. The Bureau states that as the economy grows, workers in this field will continue to be needed to prepare and examine financial records.
