UTICA, NY – 2017 SUNY Polytechnic Institute (SUNY Poly) graduate and adjunct lecturer, Bikash Regmi, FNP-BC, was recognized at the 2019 Excellence in Healthcare Awards for the positive changes he makes throughout Central New York as a healthcare leader and volunteer.

The annual ceremony, hosted by BizEvents and the Business Journal News Network and presented by Bankers Healthcare Group, honored Bikash with the Heart of Healthcare award.

“The Heart of Healthcare award goes to a volunteer in the healthcare community that is making an impact and affecting positive change for the people they contact with on a regular basis,” said Jill Allen, Director of BizEvents. “Bikash is a genuine role model and truly exemplifies the heart of healthcare.”

Born in Bhutan, the 2017 SUNY Poly graduate and his family were forced from their home country to a refugee camp in Nepal where they endured horrific living conditions. After living in Nepal for 17 years, Bikash immigrated to the United States on Sept. 3, 2009 to realize his dream of becoming a citizen.

Upon settling in Syracuse, he enrolled at SUNY Poly in 2012 and began volunteering for organizations, including Catholic Charities, where he helped educate local refugee groups about the importance of donating blood. As a university student, he became involved with campus groups and local organizations, such as the Nursing Department Curricula Committee, the Advisory Board for Munson Williams Proctor Ars Institute (MWPAI), and Sigma Theta Tau.

“It is very satisfying to discover that my work is recognized and valued by our community,” Bikash said. “I am proud that the work for organizing many charitable events, including breast cancer awareness, health promotion and disease prevention, health fairs, and DNR/DNI education, is making a positive impact in the community and has gained the recognition.”

“Bikash is a committed health care provider and educator who represents excellence in everything he does,” said Dr. Kathleen Rourke, SUNY Poly’s Interim Dean of the College of Health Sciences. “The College of Health Sciences is very proud of Bikash, and we know that he will continue to serve the citizens of Central New York with quality and compassion."

In 2017, he received his master’s degree from SUNY Poly and was awarded the Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence, recognizing students who excel in areas of leadership, campus involvement, community service, career achievement, and the creative and performing arts.
