SUNY Poly Online Graduate Program Continues Rise in National Ranking

Recognition of Master of Science in Accountancy Grows with U.S. News & World Report Rank

UTICA, NY – As a testament to the high-quality educational opportunities offered by SUNY Polytechnic Institute, the Master of Science in Accountancy program at SUNY Poly continues to rise in its national ranking by U.S. News & World Report.

“We are honored U.S. News & World Report has taken notice of the swift growth and success of the programs we offer at SUNY Poly and the numerous opportunities it provides to our students,” said SUNY Poly Interim President Dr. Bahgat Sammakia. “We are thrilled to receive national recognition for our online Master’s in Accountancy program as it continues to grow and thrive.”

In the 2017 U.S. News & World Report Best Online Programs rankings, released January 10, the Master of Science in Accountancy at SUNY Poly was ranked 52 in the nation for Best Online Graduate Business Programs (non-MBA), up several points from previous years. SUNY Poly was ranked above other institutions such as Clarkson University (#60), Marist College (#66) and University of Massachusetts – Boston (#84). Another SUNY Poly program, the Master of Business Administration Program was ranked 119 in the nation for Best Online MBA Program.

“This ranking speaks to the dedication and hard work of both our students and faculty and serves as further proof that an education of the highest quality is available right here at public New York Universities,” said SUNY Poly Provost Dr. William Durgin. “This wonderful distinction highlights the unparalleled level of faculty dedication and terrific education our students receive on campus and online at SUNY Poly.”

The 2017 Best Online Graduate Business Programs rankings assess master’s-level business degree programs that are not MBA programs with seven general ranking categories, each with different weights assigned to them that U.S. News & World Report uses in determining the rankings. These categories include student engagement, admissions selectivity, peer reputation, faculty credentials and training, and student services and technology.

"I truly thank our SUNY Poly accounting and business faculty members for their continuous effort in pursuing improvement and excellence,” said Dr. Robert Yeh, Interim Dean of the College of Health Sciences and Management. “In a sea of graduate programs in accounting and business that are competing for program accreditation and achievement recognition, I congratulate our business management department, for both of its graduate programs, one in accountancy and the other one in business administration, are again ranked nationally this year. I also thank our MS-Accountancy and MBA alumni for their loyal and heartwarming support to make our national ranking possible."

SUNY Poly’s online Master of Science in Accountancy degree program started in 1998 and was one of the very first online MS-Accountancy programs in the world. It is a 33 semester-hour program consisting of 11 courses and is registered to satisfy the 150-hour licensure requirement for New York State.  The SUNY Poly College of Health Sciences and Management participates in the “SUNY Learning Network,” a consortium of campuses that have joined together to offer graduate and undergraduate on-line courses.

"While rankings only delineate one of many dimensions associated with program quality, our recent results do strategically reflect our faculty and staff's outstanding dedication to continuous improvement and to curriculum relevance,” said Dr. Robert Edgell, SUNY Poly Assistant Professor of Technology Management and Chair of the Department of Business Management.

The SUNY Poly Master of Science in Accountancy program was developed in response to the increasing number of accountants who held undergraduate degrees in accounting and wanted to continue developing their skills and education, as well as to qualify students to sit for professional accounting examinations that lead to credentials such as the CPA (Certified Public Accountant) and the CMA (Certified Management Accountant) designations.  The accounting and auditing profession is projected to grow 13 percent by 2022, according to the U.S. Bureau of labor statistics.
