UTICA, NY – SUNY Polytechnic Institute (SUNY Poly) will present “The Origins of Life Through the Lens of a Physicist: Why Biodiversity Matters” on Friday, May 22, as part of the university’s Spotlight Series.

The free, family-friendly event will take place at 6 p.m. in the Student Center Multi-Purpose Room on SUNY Poly’s campus, located at 100 Seymour Road in Utica. Community members of all ages are invited to attend.

Presented in recognition of the International Day of Biological Diversity, the program will feature Dr. Emilio Cobanera, Professor of Physics and Director of the Center for Safe and Secure AI Robotics (CESSAIR) at SUNY Poly.

During the presentation, Dr. Cobanera will explore one of humanity’s most fascinating questions: How did life begin on Earth? Through the lens of physics, chemistry, and biology, attendees will learn how simple matter evolved into the extraordinary diversity of living organisms that exists today. The engaging discussion is designed to spark curiosity about our place in the universe and the scientific forces that shaped life on our planet.

The event is free to attend; however, registration is required due to limited seating. Space is limited to 30 participants.
Community members can register by visiting sunypoly.edu/spotlight. Registration closes Friday, May 22, at noon.

The SUNY Poly Spotlight Series features camps for children and teens, along with events and workshops for community members of all ages. Showcasing the expertise of SUNY Poly faculty, staff, and Mohawk Valley partners, the series offers engaging opportunities for learning and exploration in STEM, the arts, athletics, wellness, and more.
