Last week, SUNY Polytechnic Institute (SUNY Poly) welcomed researchers, healthcare leaders, industry partners, government representatives, and community organizations for Synergy in Partnerships, Advanced Research, and Knowledge (SPARK) Workshops, an annual weeklong workshop series designed to strengthen collaboration and expand the impact of research and innovation across disciplines.

The SPARK Workshops brought together faculty, students, postdoctoral researchers, and external partners, for the second year in a row, to share ideas, explore emerging areas of research, and build new connections that can help turn innovation into real-world solutions. Through presentations, panel discussions, facility tours, research poster sessions, and networking opportunities, participants examined how collaboration across academia, industry, healthcare, government, and community organizations can help address society's most pressing challenges.

Throughout the week, SUNY Poly hosted speakers and collaborators from organizations including Munson, Upstate Medical University, Mohawk Valley Health System, Masonic Medical Research Institute, ANDRO Computational Solutions, the Air Force Research Laboratory, Assured Information Security, Danfoss, Wolfspeed, Indium Corporation, Giotto Enterprises, IBM, and many others. In total, SUNY Poly welcomed 27 regional external collaborators to campus to interact directly with faculty researchers.

The event highlighted SUNY Poly's commitment to serving as a hub where researchers, innovators, and community leaders can come together to exchange ideas, identify opportunities, and develop partnerships that drive meaningful impact.

Each day of SPARK 2026 focused on a key area of research strength while encouraging participants to think beyond traditional academic boundaries. Topics included the intersection of liberal arts and technology; health sciences, biomedical research, and healthcare informatics; quantum technologies, cybersecurity, and advanced communications; and advanced materials, manufacturing, and artificial intelligence.

Throughout the week, President Dr. Wole Soboyejo and VP for Research Dr. Michael Carpenter shared SUNY Poly's vision for research, innovation, and community impact, emphasizing the importance of partnerships that connect discovery with real-world outcomes.

“SPARK was created to bring people together around a common goal: ensuring that the research taking place at SUNY Poly makes a meaningful impact beyond our campus,” Carpenter explained. “By connecting faculty and students with leaders from industry, healthcare, government, and community organizations, we are creating opportunities for new partnerships, new ideas, and new solutions. The conversations that began last week will help strengthen our research enterprise while delivering benefits to our region, New York State, and beyond.”

In addition to showcasing current research, the workshops provided external partners, graduate researchers, and postdoctoral scholars with opportunities to present their work, engage directly with experts across multiple sectors, and build connections that may lead to future collaborations and career opportunities.

As SUNY Poly continues to expand its research portfolio and strengthen strategic partnerships, SPARK reflects the institute's commitment to bringing together diverse voices and perspectives to ensure research and innovation delivers meaningful benefits to communities, industries, and society.
